Why ghee is considered sacred in Indian households

Ask someone what they remember about homemade ghee, and chances are they won’t begin with its health benefits or religious significance. They’ll remember the smell drifting through the house as their grandmother prepared it, the extra spoonful secretly added to dal by their mother, or hot rotis arriving straight from the tawa with melting ghee brushed across the top. These small moments are what have kept ghee at the heart of Indian homes. It carries memories just as easily as it carries flavour.

For all the changes Indian kitchens have seen over the decades, ghee has remained remarkably constant. It is still offered before a prayer, stirred into comfort food when someone is unwell and brought out during every celebration worth remembering. Perhaps that is why it continues to be regarded as sacred. Not because it is rare or expensive, but because it has quietly woven itself into India’s rituals, traditions and everyday moments for centuries. Few ingredients tell the story of an Indian home as completely as a humble spoonful of ghee.
