What’s in the bag? Inside Chennai-based The Postbox’s first experience store
A 40-year-old independent house tucked away in a quiet lane in T Nagar is The Postbox’s new home. The accessories brand, which specialises in bags, wallets, and other carrying goods, made Chennai its base nearly a decade ago, and for CEO and creative director Nikhil Joseph, this first experience store has been a long time in the making. It, after all, finally marks the brand’s move from a digital-only presence to a physical space.
“Over the years, we have had customers from Bengaluru, Mumbai, and even Dubai stop at our warehouse and pick up bags. We realised that our target group, customers between the ages of 27 to 45 years, are self-aware. They know exactly what they want, and are particular about the material of their bags and wallets. They want it to look and feel a certain way. An experience store hence felt essential and timely,” Nikhil explains.
The Postbox launched online 10 years ago with bags and for a short while, also featured experiments with ceramics and lights. The brand now stocks a range of bags in different styles: crossbody, duffels, backpacks, messengers and more, all crafted in leather or a special nylon canvas sourced from Germany.
All of this is thoughtfully on display at the new space, which Nikhil worked on with his wife, Vaishali Srinivasan of Studio 85:15. If one corner is dedicated to travel, another has their range of leather goods. Apart from the space being an extension of his aesthetic, Nikhil also says he envisions a third space here, which can host workshops, interesting pop-ups, and more community-focussed gatherings. All of this is on the first floor, and on the ground floor is The Postbox’s warehouse.

“I have only ever seen all my products on a catalogue on the website all these years, so it feels great to actually see it all under one roof,” he laughs.
The design flourishes around the store are a mix of something personal, and representative of the brand’s ethos; a photo Nikhil clicked while exiting a taxi in Kolkata hangs at the entrance. Alongside this are samples of their nylon canvas with ink droppers and water, where customers can check to see its water resistance. This is for people to slow down and touch the fabric of a brand they associate only with leather. While they do have leather products like their recent pebbled napa leather line, a majority of their bags are a mix of materials and some, entirely made of this canvas.

“There are many, who are as obsessed as I am, about the very granular details that go into a bag. Did you know there are active forums online, especially on reddit, focussed on carrying goods,” he asks. The cobra locks on their backpacks, detachable straps on laptop bags, dedicated slots for everything from cables to lipsticks, and even a special air tag sleeve are all very conscious human-centric and functional design choices that Nikhil says many geek out over.
While a new collection of roomy, lightweight leather handbags are in the making, we ask, about what people are packing their lives into, in 2026. “Everyone is now gravitating towards the crossbody bag,” Nikhil says. “Apart from our Osaka crossbody bags, we introduced two new styles and have two more coming up. I think the future is going to be all about people carrying these compact styles which leaves their hands free.” He also acknowledges the popularity of neutral styles, much like how the Uniqlo banana bag has taken the world by storm. .

As the brand continues to grow, Nikhil emphasises on not wanting to be known as a ‘friendly, neighbourhood leather goods store’. “Our presence might have been small, but we have been steadily scaling up. This experience store as well, we hope, will be a trial of sorts, for a larger-format space in the future,” he adds.
The Postbox is at 2/20, Singaram St, T. Nagar. Priced from ₹1,599 onwards.
