Paris travel alert: Louvre Museum all set to increase entry fees for Non-EU visitors in 2026 |
Paris, the French capital, is home to the world’s most-visited museum, the Louvre. But the news is that the museum is all set to hike its entry fee from 2026; but the catch here is that the new rule will be applicable only to Non-EU visitors. This means, travellers coming from non-European nations would have to pay an approved 45% hike in admission. The standard non-EU ticket from €22 (INR 2,292) to €32 (INR 3,333) from 14 January 2026. As per museum officials, the price hike is aimed at financing a large modernisation programme which is also being called the “Louvre New Renaissance”. It is an urgent security and infrastructure upgrade. This also comes as an eye-opener after a dramatic heist of crown jewels in the month of October. It showed the security, surveillance and maintenance shortages of the museum. Who pays more

Remember, the hike is only applicable to tourists coming from countries beyond the EU single market. Residents coming from countries like Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway (members of the EEA) are also exempt from the hike. This clearly means visitors from the US, the UK, China and many other non-EU countries will see the higher fee. Why the hike now

The Louvre is among the most visited museums in the world. It received about 8.7 to 9 million visitors in 2024. Museum leaders estimate the surcharge will raise roughly €15–20 million a year, money they say is crucial to cover renovation work, beefed-up security and rising energy and maintenance costs without increasing the French state’s subsidy. The decision has received split opinion. Management and policymakers argue the targeted extra charge is a practical way to protect the collections. But unions and critics have labelled the two-tier system discriminatory, arguing it damages France’s image as a welcoming tourism destination and risks alienating important markets. Tips for travellers

It is suggested to book tickets ahead and compare the pricesBuy timed-entry tickets online in advance; the Louvre typically sells out peak-time slots and pre-bookings.Check residency rulesCarry proof of residency if relevant. Confirm details before you travelWhy it matters for travelThe Louvre’s fee hike is notable. The entry cost rise at one of the world’s signature cultural sites is a significant move. But it can affect travellers at large because the museum is visited by more foreigners than locals. For travellers, it’s a reminder to give importance to advance booking to guarantee timed and easy entry.
