For a car that has spent decades setting the bench mark for luxury motoring, the new S-Class demonstrates that efficiency no longer has to come at the expense of comfort, performance or prestige. In fact, its impressive figures suggest the two can coexist remarkably well.
For generations, the S-Class has served as a showcase for new automotive technologies. Whether pioneering safety systems, introducing comfort features or setting benchmarks for refinement, Mercedes-Benz’s flagship sedan has consistently been at the forefront of innovation. The latest S-Class continues that tradition, but with a renewed focus on a challenge facing the wider automotive industry: making luxury more sustainable.
At the heart of the new S 450e is a sophisticated plug-in hybrid powertrain that pairs a 3.0-litre inline-six petrol engine with an electric motor and a 22kWh battery pack. Together, they produce 435PS and 680Nm, figures that ensure the S-Class remains effortlessly capable regardless of whether navigating city traffic or covering long distances on the highway.

Yet, it is the efficiency figures that have emerged as one of the biggest talking point. Mercedes-Benz claims an electric-only range of up to 115 kilometres and a combined fuel efficiency of 32.33kmpl. In isolation, those numbers are impressive. Viewed in the context of a full-size luxury limousine weighing well over two tonnes and costing more than ₹2 crore, they become even more noteworthy. In fact, the new S-Class now delivers figures comparable to those of some entry-level hatchbacks when it comes to fuel efficiency, a comparison that would have seemed unlikely not too long ago.
Mercedes-Benz has complemented those figures with a strong focus on usability. The S 450e is claimed to be the first plug-in hybrid luxury sedan in India to support 60kW DC fast charging, allowing the battery to charge from 20 to 80 per cent in around 20 minutes. Combined with intelligent energy management systems that constantly optimise the interaction between the petrol engine and electric motor, the result is a flagship sedan that integrates electrification with remarkable ease.
Of course, this remains an S-Class, and luxury continues to be at the heart of the experience. The rear seat is every bit as plush as one would expect from Mercedes-Benz’s flagship limousine. Deep cushioning, generous recline functions, massage programmes and neck-and-shoulder heating transform the rear cabin into a space designed as much for relaxation as transportation. The emphasis remains firmly on occupant comfort, particularly those who prefer to be chauffeured.

The cabin itself is a showcase of craftsmanship and technology. A 13.1-inch MBUX touchscreen dominates the dashboard, while rear-seat passengers benefit from twin wireless controllers and a Burmester 4D surround sound system featuring 31 speakers and 1,600 watts of output. Through its MANUFAKTUR programme, Mercedes-Benz also offers extensive personalisation options, allowing customers to tailor the flagship to their individual preferences.
Outside, the updates are subtle yet effective. The enlarged illuminated grille and distinctive lighting signatures lend the S-Class a greater sense of occasion. At night, the Micro LED headlamps and three-dimensional star-pattern tail lamps sparkle with a jewel-like quality, giving the limousine an unmistakable road presence. The design does not rely on flamboyance, but it remains unmistakably imposing.

The S-Class has never been about chasing trends. Instead, it has traditionally anticipated them. With the new S 450e, Mercedes-Benz India is signalling the direction its flagship intends to take in the years ahead. The message is clear: The future of luxury, it suggests, is not defined solely by electrification, connectivity or autonomous technologies, but by the ability to integrate them seamlessly without compromising the comfort and refinement that have long defined the S-Class.
The Mercedes-Benz S 450e Launch Edition is priced at ₹2.20 crore (ex-showroom), while the MANUFAKTUR Edition is priced at ₹2.38 crore (ex-showroom).
