The MINI that finally makes sense
For years, MINI has been one of India’s most recognisable premium brands, but practicality was rarely part of the appeal. The new Countryman C could change that and, perhaps, transform the brand’s fortunes in the process.
At first glance, the latest Countryman C appears to be a natural evolution of its predecessor. Spend a little more time with it, however, and it becomes clear that this is a far more significant departure than the familiar silhouette suggests. Larger in every dimension, the new Countryman C has moved beyond being a slightly raised hatchback and fully embracing its role as a proper premium SUV.
India’s luxury car market has steadily shifted towards SUVs over the past decade. Buyers who once gravitated towards executive sedans now prefer vehicles that offer a commanding driving position, generous cabin space and the versatility to handle everything from daily commutes to weekend getaways with ease. MINI has traditionally sat outside that conversation, but the Countryman C marks the brand’s attempt to change that.

The foundations certainly support that ambition. Sharing its underpinnings with the BMW X1, the Countryman C sits on a platform already proven in Indian conditions. The architecture delivers the benefits of modern packaging, improved structural strength and a more mature driving experience, while allowing MINI to retain its own distinct identity.
The most obvious change is the sense of space. Open the doors and the Countryman immediately feels airier and more accommodating than any MINI sold here before. There is genuine room for five adults, rear-seat comfort has improved significantly, and the generous boot means long-distance touring is no longer an afterthought. For the first time, a MINI feels perfectly capable of handling family duties without asking compromises from its owner.
The cabin itself deserves special mention. In a segment where soft-touch plastics and glossy surfaces are becoming increasingly predictable, MINI has taken a different approach. The fabric-like materials used across the dashboard and door panels give the interior a warmer, more organic character. It feels contemporary without trying too hard to look futuristic and creates an ambience that is distinct from anything else in the luxury SUV space. It may seem like a small detail, but it contributes significantly to the sense of occasion behind the wheel.

The exterior design follows a similar philosophy. Despite its larger dimensions, the Countryman hasn’t abandoned the personality that makes a MINI instantly recognisable. The proportions are more substantial, the stance is noticeably more planted and the detailing is sharper and more confident than before. Yet there remains a sense of playfulness to the overall design. The new Countryman C may have grown up, but it hasn’t lost its personality in the process.
Technology has naturally taken centre stage as well. The large circular OLED display remains a focal point, while the overall cabin layout feels cleaner and more intuitive than before. Features such as the premium audio system, connected technologies, advanced parking aids and a host of digital convenience functions ensure the Countryman feels thoroughly up to date for modern luxury car buyers.
Then there is the question many enthusiasts are likely to ask: is a 1.5-litre petrol engine enough for a vehicle of this size? On paper, it may seem modest, particularly in a market where larger engines often dominate conversations. But numbers rarely tell the whole story. BMW Group has built a reputation around extracting impressive drivability from relatively compact turbocharged engines, and there is little reason to believe the Countryman will be any different. The real test, as always, lies in how the powertrain delivers its performance in everyday conditions. If history is any indication, the driving experience is likely to be far more impressive than the displacement figure suggests.

And that, perhaps, is what makes the Countryman C so interesting. It isn’t trying to be the most powerful SUV in its class, nor does it rely solely on nostalgia and heritage to attract buyers. Instead, it combines the charm and individuality that have always defined MINI with the practicality and usability expected of a modern luxury SUV.
Historically, buying a MINI required a degree of emotional commitment. Owners accepted certain compromises in practicality because they wanted something different from the established luxury brands. The Countryman C asks for fewer sacrifices.
With local production improving accessibility and demand for premium compact SUVs remaining strong, the Countryman is arguably more receptive to the brand than ever before. Rather than chasing volume, MINI appears focused on broadening its relevance.

The result is a vehicle that feels less like a niche lifestyle product and more like a genuine contender in the luxury SUV segment. And if MINI gets the driving experience right, as it so often does, the Countryman C could become one of the most important cars the brand has launched in India.
The all-new MINI Countryman C is priced at ₹47.50 lakh (ex-showroom).
